FORMER pupils from Abingdon, Radley and Headington School are among those named in the senior Great Britain World Championship team, writes John Wiggins.

Four of Abingdon School’s alumni feature in the 64-strong team to do battle in Florida, USA.

Tim Clarke, Matt Rossiter, Jamie Copus and Ollie Cook will all be involved, as well as Oxford Brookes University’s Harry Brightmore and Matt Tarrant.

The men’s team contains more familiar names from the Brookes stable with Pete Chambers and Joel Cassells.

One of the youngest in the team will be Radley College’s Tom George who features in the men’s pair.

The 17-boat team will race at the Saratosa-Bradenton Championships from September 24 to October 1.

Other Oxford Blues are in the women’s team where Anastasia Chitty rows in the eight along with Headingtonian, Fi Gammond.

Another Blue, Ellie Piggott lined up with Wallingford’s Gemma Hall in the lightweight quad.

This weekend sees the 176th Oxford City Royal Regatta with racing over ten hours on both Saturday and Sunday.

The event was significantly oversubscribed, but promises to be a great spectacle for anyone taking a walk down the river from Folly Bridge or upstream from Donnington Bridge.
