RUGBY UNION: Hawks soar in opener
10:00am Tuesday 10th September 2013 in Rugby
HENLEY Hawks came on strong in the second half to hammer Tynedale 51-17 at Dry Leas.
Hawks led just 22-17 at the break, but roared away to a seven-try victory on their return to English rugby’s third tier, with No 8 Robbie Stapley named man-of-the-match.
Fly half James Comben slotted a third-minute penalty, but Tynedale responded with fly half Gavin Beasley converting a try he created for centre Ben Frankland.
Two more Comben penalties were cancelled out by one from Beasley.
Henley went 14-10 ahead after captain Martin Nutt dived over following wing Xavier Andre’s break.
Comben slotted a fourth penalty after Tynedale lock Andy Buist was given a yellow card.
Henley added a further try from Comben, but he tweaked a hamstring in the act of scoring and had to be replaced.
Tynedale took advantage of a yellow card for Hawks flanker Will Woodward to send Buist over for a try, Beasley converting.
Hawks began the second half with 14 men, but found their form with two quick tries from Tom Allen, who had moved to fly half, and wing Alan Awcock, full back Liam O’Neill converting the former.
Allen mesmerised the defence to score his second, converted by replacement centre Danny Wells.
Hawks now had control up front, with prop Dave Manning causing real problems at scrum time.
Wells’s strong running was rewarded with a try on 70 minutes, while replacement flanker Tommy Haynes stretched over for No 7 as Henley wrapped up a big win.
