RUGBY UNION: Davies is handed first league start
Alex Davies comes in for his first league start of the season as London Welsh visit Leeds Carnegie tomorrow (3).
Davies starts at scrum half in place of Rob Lewis, who drops to the bench.
Club captain Matt Corker replaces Peter Browne in the second row, while Dan Browne moves from No 8 to blindside flanker as Richard Thorpe drops out.
Ben Pienaar comes in at No 8, with Alan Awcock, who is on loan from Henley Hawks, continuing on the bench.
Former England, Leicester and Harlequins centre Ollie Smith has been working with Welsh as defence coach, but has yet to get a permanent deal.
Head coach Justin Burnell said: “Competition for places is hotting up and changes in selection are purely down to how strong our squad is, rather than who’s playing well and who isn’t playing well.
“Leeds are a very good team.
“They’ll see us as a massive opportunity to progress up the league, while for us Sunday is a chance to maintain our status and stay on top of the league.”
Fly half Alex Lozowski and wing Oli Goss return for Leeds.
Josh Griffin, who hails from Witney and whose older brother Darrell plays rugby league for Salford, provides backs cover on the bench.
