CHINNOR scrum half Greg Goodfellow said signing off his county career with victory at Twickenham was the perfect way to end what had been a frustrating season.

The 30-year-old helped Cornwall beat Cheshire 35-13 to retain the Bill Beaumont Cup on Sunday.

Goodfellow, who heralds from Hawick in Scotland, joined National League 2 South outfit Chinnor last summer after four years on the south-west coast with Redruth.

The former Cornish Pirates half back admitted he had been “below par” during his first season with the Oxfordshire club, but after playing his last game for Cornwall he is already looking forward to the 2016-17 campaign.

“I have not had a particularly great season at Chinnor,” he said.

“It has been really frustrating, but at the end I found a little bit of form and playing for the county has done me the world of good.

“I have had a good campaign for Cornwall, managed to score a couple of tries, so I am really looking forward to starting pre-season and getting the ball rolling in September.

“That was my final (Cornwall) appearance because I want to concentrate on my family and I want people to remember me and say ‘that scrum half, Greg, was a good player for Chinnor’.”

It was the first time the Scot, who works for property developer Rectory Homes, had experienced victory at the home of English rugby with Cornwall after defeats in 2013 and 2014, while he missed last year’s campaign through suspension.

Goodfellow’s father, fiancé and brother were in attendance to watch him win at Twickenham, and the former Scotland U18, U19 and U21 international enjoyed what turned out to be a memorable day in south-west London.

“(Twickenham) is a special place to play even for me, I’m Scottish and I would trade Murrayfield any day of the week,” he said.

“It is a phenomenal experience.

“A lot of people say ‘it can’t mean that much to you, you’re not Cornish’, but I spent a long time there – it is like my second home.

“It means the world, you are playing for Cornwall and running out in front of all those fans and my family were there.

“It is probably one of the best memories I will hold for the rest of my playing career.”
