Witney made it two derby victories in a row when they won 19-13 away to Oxford Harlequins.

Following last week’s narrow success over Banbury, Witney continued their great start in South West 1 East by inflicting a second successive home defeat on Quins.

This is in contrast to last season, when Quins were unbeaten at Marston Ferry Road.

Quins, who dominated the set scrums, opened strongly and took the lead in the sixth minute when centre Jack Robinson finished off a fine move with a try in the corner.

Witney took the lead thanks to two penalties from fly half Henry Lamb.

Just before half-time Witney wing Arron Lambourne scored a try in the corner but Huw Dimond kicked a penalty on the stroke of half-time to trail 11-8 at the break.

Withey made changes in the second half.

Matt Clarke moved to centre from full back to replace the hard running and tackling Jake Thomas, and Charlie Dyde came on as fullback.

Quins, despite suffering problems in the line-out, pressed strongly in the second half, but Witney increased their lead after 70 minutes with a third Lamb penalty.

Two minutes from time, Quins’ Archie Van Dijk touched down in the corner, but the failed conversion left them a point behind.

Witney scored a last-minute try from Matt Clarke to give them a flattering 19-13 scoreline.

A late penalty by Ed Phillips, who also scored two tries, gave Banbury a thrilling 25-24 success at Chippenham.

The visitors twice trailed early on, but hit back with tries from Josh Deegan, who started and finished the move, and a close-range effort by Phillips, who converted for a 12-10 interval lead.

Early in the second half, Phillips stretched Banbury’s lead to 12 points, landing a penalty before diving over for his second try, which he converted.

But Banbury errors crept in during the last quarter, allowing the hosts to snatch a 24-22 lead with two tries, one of which was converted.

However, Banbury were awarded a penalty six metres in from touch and Phillips kept his cool to win the game.

Grove recorded their first victory of the season when they won 25-10 at home to Windsor.
