OXFORD University Whippets won the Oxfordshire Shield for the first time with a deserved 34-10 victory over the Blue Boar.

The students’s pace and power proved too much as tries from Kyle Grant, Hugo Batten, Tom Humberstone, Alexander Agureev, Rob Balfour and Rob Oliver sparked jubilant celebrations at Iffley Road.

Whippets were fast out of the traps and took the lead on seven minutes when outside centre Grant raced over for an unconverted try.

Boar responded well and levelled at 5-5 moments later with winger Jack Power touching down out wide.

An error-strewn half an hour ensued, before the students took a 12-5 lead into the break when a quick tap-penalty led to replacement full back Batten going over. Fly half Humberstone added the extras.

Whippets had only a slender lead for all their first half endeavour, but that soon changed, albeit due to Boar’s indiscipline.

Full back James Standen was sin-binned for not rolling away and the students took full advantage on 47 minutes with Humberstone converting his own try.

It was soon 29-5 as No 8 Agureev and scrum half Balfour crossed.

Things got worse for Boar when, despite Standen returning to the pitch, scrum half Rob Cottrell and No 8 Tom Fillery were sin-binned within nine minutes of each other.

Whippets went over again when lock Oliver was driven across from a line-out to put the result beyond doubt.

The last ten minutes belonged to Boar and, after inside centre James Povey was sin-binned for the students, Power dived over, but it was only a consolation.
