RUGBY UNION: Quins finally hand over cup

Oxford Harlequins have finally handed over the Oxfordshire Cup more than six weeks after it was due to be presented to Chinnor.

Oxfordshire RFU secretary Ken Bumpass collected the trophy from Quins captain Simon Chadbone on Tuesday night, but was less than impressed by its condition.

Chinnor had to receive a subsititute trophy after defeating Witney in this year’s final and the delay in handing over the real cup has not gone down well with the new champions.

Bumpass confirmed the Oxfordshire Cup had been engraved up to date.

But he added: “It would have been nice if they had cleaned it. There is also a dent on it, which Simon said they had done to it.”

Chinnor will receive the trophy at the Oxfordshire RFU’s annual meeting on July 6.

An executive meeting on June 29 will decide if any action will be taken against Quins, who won the cup between 2006 and 2009.

Chinnor’s frustrations were shown in a recent email secretary Carol Bradbrook-Taylor copied to the Oxford Mail.

She said: “The trophy has not made its way to Chinnor RFC despite many requests, and a number of opportunities for Simon Chadbone to return it when visiting our club for county training sessions.

“I have also been informed that James Cathcart has not been given the trophy for being man of the match as sponsored by the Oxford Mail.

“All of this seems very poor show from last year’s winners. I can only express, on behalf of our senior committee, dismay and disbelief as such conduct is unbecoming in the game of rugby.”

Quins’ ex-chairman Kevin Johnson said the delay had partly been caused by them losing the cup’s base, which was later discovered in their clubhouse, but he declined to comment on any damage.

Johnson said: “If the Oxfordshire RFU have got a problem, they have not approached me about it. The cup has been available for collection for quite some time.

“The frustrating thing is that we had both parts of the cup at the time of the final. We just didn’t know that.”

The Ron Grimshaw Memorial Trophy, which Cathcart was due to receive after being named man-of-the-match in the final, remains at large.

Last year’s winner, Quins wing Ollie Campbell, appears to have lost it.

Of course it was wrong of Quins not to get the cup back before the final and there are a lot of them that are embarrassed and apologetic by what’s happened but people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
Perhaps the 'shocked and dismayed' people from Chinnor memories have been effected as a result of the disappointment of not receiving the cup on the day but memory recalls a certain club that plays in black and white who lost the colt county cup and didn't even say sorry.
What happened on that occasion is another story ……. unbecoming in the game of rugby?”

Time may change a lot, but some things they stay the same!
Unbecoming in the game of rugby? Jeffrey & Richards, Calcutta Cup 1988? Or is there an insinuation that there is malevolent deliberation on the Quins part behind this? And why blame it all on Chadbone? Perhaps Chinnor RFC want to follow up with their threat of involving the police for this scandalous incident.
The truth is that there has been a bit of high jinks in time honoured rugby tradition and some people have got a bit haughty and precious about it.
I hope the Thame lot do a better job of looking after it before the Quins regain the cup in 2011, when we will try to upgrade our facilities to include a trophy cabinet as it looks like we will be needing one.
P.S. Chinnor Fan - very unsporting of you not to collect your pint - is this the end of the affair?

You're going to buy a trophy cabinet just for a length of carpet? Seems like a waste of money to me.

City_Cyclops - presume you have just come back from from a long vacation. Your time away overlapped the fantastic record breaking win by Chinnor in the cup final of course! You missed a great final between 2 teams that were a credit to rugby and Oxfordshire.

Your comments are WAY too late - you should have been making your comments here weeks ago when this first happened.

But to respond to your late message; when Quins win the cup next season, Chinnor will keep the cup for 2 months and then we will see who will be squealing on this forum!!!

As for an upgrade to your trophy cabinet - what other silverware are Quins expecting to win? National Cup time is it? Don't think so somehow. So keep the one you have got its certainly going to be big enough for you for the forseeable future.

Yet another bite with some tit for tat thrown in!
The P.S. may explain the "vacation", though use of US vocabulary does not qualify you for urban status.

CityCyclops - you really need to learn how forums work.
I seem to remember that was one of the things I suggested you do over the summer.
Forums are for baiting people and responding - go and have a look at the Rolling Maul forums to read about the Ampthill mess in the North.

So, I'm not biting at all - its all part of the fun of dealing with you!

Comedy gold. Loving how this b***h fest continues in the off-season!

Good OTT stuff from the Chinnor secretary. Any reason to cc the Oxford Mail, other than to try to embarrass Quins?

Poor form by Quins to lose the trophy, then take so long to get it back together. To say it was available for collection is also something of a cop-out - surely the onus was on them to return it.

Interesting that Ollie Campbell values his MOM trophy so much he's lost it!!

As I said, comedy gold all round

hi bertandernie - yep the fun keeps on coming! CityCyclops needs to get his forum skills honed to be any form of competition.

Just for your info Oxford Mail were involved because the Man of the Match trophy is from them not the ORFU.
