Mixed feelings for skipper Mills
JON Mills said he was happy enough with London Welsh’s start to the season, despite their 68-19 defeat to Stade Francais.
The Exiles captain, who joined the club in 2007, accepted his side had been off the pace against Stade.
But reflecting on the campaign so far, Mills felt there was far more positives than negatives.
“If you had offered me after six league games that we would be on ten points, with Sale being on one, I would have bitten your hands off,” said Mills.
“Then playing Gloucester and Saracens, we definitely feel we could have finished on the right side of one of them and got another win.
“But we are happy with where we are at. Let’s be realistic, if we finish with one point more than one other side, we will be a happy bunch at the end of the season.”
He added: “The boys are loving it. We were disappointed to be off the pace today, but that happens sometimes and we’ll try to put it right next week.”
Mills felt Welsh’s own errors had played a big part in their own downfall.
“If you don’t get your basics right, you will struggle against anyone,” he said.
“They are a typical French side. When they get that ball going forward, they love it really.
“They finished some great tries and really worked off our mistakes.
“The turnover ball they had really caused us a lot of problems.
“When we had the ball, we kept getting turned over and played into their hands.”
