BANBURY had a day to forget after finding themselves on the end of a 61-3 hiding at promotion-chasing Newbold on Avon in Midlands 2 West South on Saturday.

A combination of a poor day at the office by the visitors and a strong performance from the hosts ensured a onesided match.

Ironically, Banbury took an early lead when skipper Ed Phillips slotted home a 40-metre penalty.

But that was as good as it got for the visiting side.

Newbold’s first try coincided with Banbury’s first two injuries of the afternoon, which resulted in George Grieve requiring surgery on his shoulder and Sam Mills withdrawn with an ankle injury.

The home side soon took control, and built up a commanding 33-3 half-time advantage.

Banbury’s task was made even harder after the break when Jacob Mills was forced off with concussion and Steve Nutt was forced to play on with a shoulder injury.

It meant they had to play the remainder of the match with 14 men, and the home side took full advantage to score points at will.

Ben Dawes (2), Rory Blood (2), Joss Andrews (2), Shaun Pollard, Danny Treharne and Dan Facer scored tries for the hosts, with Lloyd Warned adding eight conversions.
