Oxfordshire's Over 55 men missed out on the national Veteran’s Division 1A title.
After winning four matches out of four, Oxon went into the final contest against Essex knowing it was winner takes all.
However, playing at the Clearview Tennis Centre in Brentwood, the team of Bruce Young, John Spratt, John Brewster and Duncan Todd fell short.
They went down 5-0, but the match was closer than the scoreline suggests, with Spratt – who qualifies for the over 65 team – losing 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 in the second singles.
Edward Alder, from St Hugh’s, won the under nine Grade 5 tournament held at his school in Faringdon.
Abingdon’s Matilda Mutav-dzic won the under ten event.
The best performance from an Oxfordshire player in the under 14 Grade 4 tournament at Abingdon’s White Horse Leisure & Tennis Centre was from Guy Mobey, of Faringdon, who lost 4-1, 4-0 to Hampshire’s Matthew Whitehead in the final.
This Sunday sees Kingston Bagpuize and Southmoor hold their finals day, while Lower Windrush and Woodstock are running open men’s doubles tournaments.
