Abingdon's Alexis Canter said winning the under 16 boys’ singles title in the Nike Junior National Champion-ships at Nottingham completed a perfect week.

No 1 seed Canter defeated Cambridge’s Finn Bass 6-3, 6-0 in the final to cap a great seven days for the rising star.

He said: “It’s an amazing feeling standing here with this trophy.

“There are some pretty impressive winners on here and I’m so proud to be up there with them.”

Canter, 16, dropped just one set en route to the final where he started strongly by breaking Bass in the opening game.

The Abingdon player’s lack of errors gave him the edge, and although Bass saved three set points to break back, Canter immediately responded to take the first set.

Showing outstanding court coverage, Canter kept a stranglehold on the second set to seal the title.

“I had to really focus at the start of the second set,” he said.

“If I had let Finn back in at that stage it could have been very different.

“I saved my best tennis of the week for today.

“As a player you want to be continually improving as the tournament progresses, so it has been a perfect week for me.

“I felt like I used my forehand really well – I moved well around it which allowed me to dominate points.

“It’s been a great week. One that I will remember for a long time.

“There were some really tough matches that, looking back on now, I am very happy with how I played.

“It’s a fantastic tournament and I’m over the moon.”

Canter’s victory came after a very successful tournament representing Great Britain Under 16s at Wimbledon.

He won all five singles matches against opponents from Japan, USA, Italy, South Africa and Argentina in the IC World Finals.

Bampton's Liz Bamber was knocked out of the British Closed Seniors’ Grass Court Championships at the semi-final stage.

Bamber lost 7-5, 3-6, 6-0 to second seed Ann Brown (Nottinghamshire) in the over 60s ladies’ singles at Wimbledon.

Max Struthers and Susanna Wright were this week crowned Oxfordshire Wilson County Closed under nine boys’ and girls’ singles champions at North Oxford.
