ABINGDON pupils have dominated the local section in the year eight and year ten AEGON Team Tennis Schools National Championships.

St Helen and St Katherine’s are unbeaten in both competitions with one match to play, although their passage has not been straightforward.

The year eight team needed a shoot-out to beat Oxford High.

In the year ten competition, they shared the singles 2-2 with Cokethorpe and they were still level after the doubles.

In-form Cokethorpe had not dropped a set in wins over Headington and Oxford High, but in the shoot-out Olivia Christie and Emily Taylor starred to win 10-4 and move into pole position for qualification to the regional stage.

Abingdon Boys School can already look forward to the next step after winning both the year eight and year ten competitions.

  • OXFORDSHIRE’S under 14 boys found the competition tough in their first appearance at the national finals of the AEGON County Cup.

Standards in the final eight were high in Nottingham for Dave Took’s squad, made up of Sam Christie, Connor Ferguson, Guy Mobey, Ollie Broadhurst and George Slater.

The first stage brought defeats against Warwickshire (4-2), Middlesex (5-1) and Yorkshire (5-1) to finish bottom of Group A.

They fared better in the play-off against Dorset, before being edged out on a shoot-out following a 3-3 draw to finish eighth.
