ALEXIS Canter has been knocked out of Wimbledon after a straight sets defeat in the second round of the boys' doubles today.

Canter, 17, from Long Wittenham, and Finn Bass, 15, lost 6-1, 7-5 to fourth seeds Reilly Opelka and Akira Santillan on Court 8.

After breaking Canter's serve in the first game, Opelka and Santillan dominated the opening set and claimed it with the loss of one game.

The British duo came out fighting in the second and saved three match points, before bowing out.

Despite defeat, Canter was upbeat about their performance against two players who are in their last year on the ITF Junior circuit.

He said: "I thought they started really well, but we did not do too much wrong.

"They were just better than us.

"We did well in the second set, came out fighting, and we were unlucky in the last game.

"We had nothing to lose and we were aggressive and tried new things - it worked for the most part."

Canter did not lose his serve in their first round win on Tuesday, but was immediately broken by Opelka and Santillan.

The fourth seeds then consolidated and went onto break Canter again for 4-1.

Opelka and Santillan exuded confidence and power all over the court, but it was a double fault from Bass that handed them the opener 6-1.

The British pair came out fighting in the second, but were unable to convert a break point in the third game after Canter flashed a forehand winner cross court.

And with the set on serve at 4-3, they dug deep to fend off three break points, thanks to strong serving from Bass.

Opelka kept the pressure on with a hold to love, before Canter saved three match points with an ace, backhand winner and a forced error to make it 5-5.

It seemed only a matter of time until they were broken and on their opponents' fourth match point in the 11th game their fate was sealed.

Canter and Bass attacked the net, but after Opelka's lob landed smack on the baseline, the latter could only put a backhand wide.
