LUCY Brown helped Oxfordshire’s women recover from a bad start to finish second in Group 6B of the LTA Winter County Cup in Wrexham.

They started the weekend with a heavy 9-0 defeat to hosts North Wales.

But the arrival of Brown, who was ranked inside the WTA’s top 600 in 2012, lifted Oxon.

Trailing 4-3 to Cumbria, Alice Atkins and Taysie Gujral won 6-4, 6-1 to level the match, before Brown and Ariadne Katsoulis sealed victory with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph.

Oxon then went on to beat the Channel Islands 9-0, with Brown finishing with a 100 per cent win record and debutant Katherine Hampshire enjoying two victories.

The men’s team ensured their Division 5 survival despite losing three of their four matches in Cambridge.

They began the weekend with a 7-2 victory over Bedfordshire which helped them avoid relegation, but losses to Hereford & Worcester and Cambridgeshire followed.

Captain Jon Maskens won all three of his singles matches.

In the 10U event of the 12 Counties Championship, victories for brothers Jack and Oliver Veal helped Oxon boys earn two draws for third place in Division 2A.

But the girls finished bottom without a win, leaving them at the foot of Division 2A ahead of the 16U event on December 11.
