TENNIS: In-form Cartledge sets up victory

JOE Cartledge continued his unbeaten singles run to help North Oxford win 8-4 against Maidenhead 2nd in the Southern Regional Division of the Aegon Team Tennis League.
Cartledge made it five successive wins this season with a 6-1, 6-4 success over Lorne Edmunds, which levelled the tie after Jack Rooney lost the opening rubber.
Balazs Vuksitz had match points before losing a tight match 6-3, 6-7, 4-6 to Andrew Flynn, but Chris Brewster ensured the singles were shared with a straight sets win.
The hosts won both doubles matches convincingly.
Rooney and Cartledge took the first 6-4, 6-4, before Vuksitz and Brewster sealed the victory with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
The result kept North Oxford in contention for a top-three finish with one tie remaining.
They will host Caversham on Sunday, June 24, with the winners certain to claim third place.

HEADINGTON’S Girls suffered a dramatic exit in the regional final of the Aegon Schools Tennis Competition.
The tie against Marlborough College in the senior event, open to players aged 11-18, went all the way to a shoot-out.
Headington lost 7-6, ending Oxfordshire’s involvement in the competition as Marlborough progressed to the national stage.
In the Year 10 girls’ event, Our Lady’s Abingdon beat Headington Girls 8-4 to remain unbeaten after four matches.
Headington and Oxford High can still qualify, with June fixtures deciding the county finalists.
In the Year 8 girls’ tournament, Oxford High have won all their matches to top the group, with St Helen and St Catherine heading for second place.
Winners of the county events proceed to the regional knock-outs in September.
OXFORD City went top of the OLTA Wilson League Division 1 with a 4-0 win over Virgin Active.
There was also a whitewash for Woodstock against Goring, while Witney also climbed the table following a 3-1 win against Cholsey.
A draw against North Oxford B was enough to send Benson top of Division 2.
Division 3 leaders Woodstock B kept up their 100 per cent record thanks to a 3-1 victory over Blewbury.
THE popular Henmans Solicitors Junior Tournament is being held at Woodstock Tennis Club next week.
The expanded competition, which includes eight and under and nine and under categories, is held from Monday to Saturday.
