'Briton' gored to death by bull

Reports that a young man gored to death during the running of the bulls in Pamplona was British are being urgently investigated by the Foreign Office.

The man was gored in the neck and lung during a run in which nine other people were injured after a bull separated from the pack.

Soon after the goring, the man was pictured lying on a stretcher, his face and neck stained with blood and his eyes only half-open.

An emergency medical worker was leaning over him applying what appeared to be gauze to a wound on his neck.

Spanish media reported the man had emergency surgery in hospital but died of his injuries.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the reports and we are urgently investigating."

Fernando Boneta, emergency room chief at Navarra Hospital, said three other people were gored, and six others suffered bumps, bruises and other minor injuries.

Fifteen people have now died at the Fiesta of San Fermin in northern Spain since record-keeping began in 1924.

This was the the first fatal goring at the event since 1995 when 22-year-old American Matthew Tassio was killed.

But the most recent death was in 2003 when 63-year-old Pamplona native Fermin Etxeberri was trampled on the head.
