One of the founding restaurants of the Oxford Castle development has closed with the loss of 19 jobs.

The branch of upmarket burger chain Tootsies site is one of ten to be closed by administrators BDO which was appointed on Monday after parent company Clapham House withdrew financial support.

While 11 of the 21-strong chain were sold to rival operator Giraffe for £2.5m, the Oxford branch was not considered viable.

Shay Bannon, BDO business restructuring partner, said: "It is unfortunate that, due to the economic climate and difficult trading conditions, a significant number of restaurants were loss-making, which threatened the viability of the whole group."

Tootsies was one of the first restaurants to open in the Oxford Castle development in 2005 and is the second eaterie at the site to shut this year following the closure of the Ha! Ha! Bar and Canteen in January.

Clapham House said it had provided "significant financial support" to Tootsies since buying the business in 2006, but had come to the conclusion that there was "little prospect" the company would generate a profit in the near future.

Chairman David Page said: "We have taken the steps described in this announcement with great regret, having spent considerable time researching alternative strategic options for Tootsies.

"We believe this is the best course of action to protect shareholder value whilst minimising job losses."

Clapham House made a £26.2m pre-tax loss in the year to March 29 after taking a £24.2m hit on the struggling chain.

The parent company's core restaurant brands, Gourmet Burger Kitchen which has a branch in George Street, Oxford, and The Real Greek, are not affected by the administration.

BDO added that it will continue to discuss the potential sales of the leases of the closed restaurants with "any interested parties".
