The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in the county has fallen for the first time since last November.

Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show 7,090 claimed the benefit in March, a fall of 135 on the previous month.

The data also shows there are 930 fewer people signing on the dole than at the same time last year.

Nationally, there was a 7,000 fall in Jobseeker's Allowance claimants last month, to 1.53 million.

But overall unemployment in the last quarter, including those not claiming benefit, increased by 70,000 to 2.56 million.

The total is the worst since last summer, giving the UK a jobless rate of 7.9 per cent.
