FOUR STARS The Bury Knowle Art Group was founded in 1948, and each year it holds a winter exhibition. In 2013 this is at Wolfson College where the panoramic views across the River Cherwell and the water meadows provide a splendid context for the work on show.
The exhibition contains around 90 pieces, spanning a wide range of portraits of animals, people and buildings, and of land and seascapes.
Peter Lawrence has used oil on canvas in Ploughed Field, Bideford and Cotswold Farm capturing the rugged openness of a winter’s seaside farmland in one, and in the other portraying the contours of a more gentle landscape.
Margaret Bullard uses water colours in From the Roof of the Radcliffe Camera to create a gentle autumnal view of the spires and turrets of Oxford’s skyline.
Penny Hobson works in cut paper. She starts by drawing her design, selecting the colours she wants to use – a maximum of five – then cutting these to the shapes to build up a layered whole.
In Paper Tiger, pictured, she combines the magnificence of the creature with a poignancy in its gaze, which reflects the threat of extinction.
