When it was announced back in September that Status Quo – the band with more hit singles than any other ever – would be headlining Lechlade’s fledgling festival, there was naturally a sense of shock around the quaint little Cotswold town.

This was a coup of massive proportions.

As the sun went down last Sunday the wait was finally over and Lechlade, the little place where I had grown up, became effectively a ghost town as nearly every man, woman, child and dog descended on the riverside to see The Quo perform in their backyard.

The man in front of me in the crowd was wearing a Quo 2015 tour T-shirt, and to see Lechlade alongside the likes of Barcelona, Munich, and London’s O2 arena made me very proud.

Their performance did too. They got the crowd involved, mixing new material with classics like Rockin’ All Over the World, Whatever You Want and Down Down.

The festival’s friendly atmosphere added to the show, with people of all ages in the boogie rock mood.

Francis Rossi and co may have left a little disappointed though, as they were arguably outshone by what some may call a glorified tribute band — Saturday night headliners Dr and the Medics. Their incredible verve and energy, combined with their glamour and psychedelic aura, made their live performance quite special, as did their recognition of their status as one-hit-wonders.

Organisers are confident the festival pulled in more than 5,000 people, which was their target for 2015. Lechlade seems to get better and better every year and I can only see it growing from strength to strength in years to come.
