MIRANDA RICHMOND

The North Wall, Summertown

May 28-June 14, Monday-Friday 10am to 4pm.

Admission free.

Born in Buckinghamshire and trained at Bristol College of Art (1977-80), Miranda has lived and worked in the north-east of England for many years. In 1979 she met (and later married) the painter Miles Richmond who was a great teacher and strong influence on her work. He himself was a student of David Bomberg. They worked together mainly from the landscapes of the North Yorkshire Moors and Dales, later moving to Middlesbrough and working from the industrial landscape and coast around Teesside. She has also made painting trips to Egypt, Spain, Sweden, many times to Scotland, and more recently to Australia. Three years ago she returned to Buckinghamshire, and this period resulted in some portraits of family and friends included in this exhibition. Her normal practice is to work outdoors in the landscape, frequently on a series from one location over a period of months, through different seasons, weathers and times of day, and in a variety of media. However she does not see her painting as about the transitory effects of different conditions, but as an attempt to find an underlying structure with some depth and permanency.
