IT may be nearly a year since the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, but in one corner of Oxford the street party spirit is still going strong.

Risinghurst and Sandhills is to get its own fete this summer after the success of a Diamond Jubilee event last year.

Organisers hope the June celebration will become an annual date in the Oxford community’s calendar.

Risinghurst and Sandhills Parish Council put on last June’s event to mark the Queen’s 60 years on the throne.

And the day of fun – at Risinghurst Playing Fields in Groveland Road – was such a success it will be repeated almost exactly a year later, on June 9.

Residents have formed a committee.

Attractions will include morris dancing, face and body painting, a jazz pianist, a choir from Sandhurst Primary School and a raffle to win afternoon tea at Oxford’s Randolph Hotel.

There will be a barbecue, beer, and charitable groups will have stalls.

Fete committee chairman Barbara Naylor said: “I feel quite passionately about it for the community. You just don’t get together so much.

“We were so successful with the Jubilee fete that I thought it would be nice to do something else. We hope to run the event every year from now on.”

The Ringwood Road resident added: “In 1977 when it was the Silver Jubilee I was a young parent and we had a wonderful time. I’m in my 70s now but it would be nice to get some of that spirit back for everyone. We hope for around 500 people.”

“Last year it was run by the parish council but now we have people from all walks of life making up the committee.”

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Thames Valley Police will also discuss their roles with revellers.

It will take place from 1pm to 6pm with entry 50p for adults, and children free.
