Emmett Schlueter, (ViewPoints, April 16), is praising Margaret Thatcher.

Therefore, presumably, he is criticising the most powerful economy in Europe that, as far as I know, did not close down its coal mines, nor its heavy engineering industries, nor stop Government funding of apprenticeships, nor hammer its trades unions and didn’t sell off its social housing rental income, ensuring we all have far higher council taxes (remember the poll tax riots?).

As a result, because council rents go into the same pot as council tax, a study showed some years ago that council rent payers were subsidising private house dwellers like me where council-provided services were concerned, quite contrary to popular myth on the subject.

Just think of council housing as the council’s golden goose.
