Sir – As a member of BBOWT, it was very disappointing to read the article from Giles Strother (Weekend, April 4) advocating the ‘culling’ of deer. What is worse is his belief that the killing of animals is somehow in their best interests.
Mr Strother’s view of seeing only deer species and not individual sentient beings seems to allow him to casually talk of killing as if there is no suffering involved. This is simply not the case and no life should be dismissed in this way.
Surely it is this self-appointed human trait of picking and choosing what should and shouldn’t live and in what numbers that has helped lead to the ecological crisis that BBOWT and others are struggling against?
