TELEVISION personality Christine Hamilton is calling on people to join her at the startline of this year’s Oxford Town and Gown race.

For the second year running, Mrs Hamilton will be starting the race on Sunday, May 12, as well as helping out with the team of volunteers who make sure the 10km charity run goes smoothly.

After Mrs Hamilton’s involvement in the race last year, she was invited to become an ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, which organises the race, and will be ‘head volunteer’, hoping to inspire others to muck in and get involved.

Over the past 31 years, the run has raised more than £1m.

Mrs Hamilton, wife of former MP Neil Hamilton and star of reality television shows such as I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and Celebrity Masterchef, said: “I don’t just stand there with a gun and fire it, I get involved with everything else as well.

“It’s getting bigger and bigger every year and has been going for a long time and has got such a reputation now that professional athletes join as well.”

She described the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign as an “unbelievably good cause” and said the day itself was a “huge amount of fun”.

She said: “I am 64. I’m an old codger, so if I can find something to do to contribute, anybody can.”

Muscular Dystrophy Campaign challenge events manager Toya Champ said Mrs Hamilton had been an inspiring force for runners last year.

She said: “We think her willing, ‘can do’ attitude is inspiring and we hope seeing Christine and our other fantastic volunteers in action will encourage others to give volunteering a go.”
