THE threat of flooding still hangs over the county as more rain fell on the county today - following in the wake of heavy downpours which have seen rivers flood their banks this week.

The Environment Agency still had several rivers in Oxfordshire on Flood Watch yesterday, following the wet weekend of last week.

Waterways including Islip, Evenlode, Windrush, Cherwell, Ray, Thames, Charney Bassett, Stanford-in-the-Vale and Ock are being monitored.

An agency spokesman said: "The situation is river levels remain high across the area.

"However, levels are beginning to subside and stabilise and steadily drop. Further rain is forecast for today which may cause river levels to rise again."

This comes after the River Cherwell broke its banks at several points overnight on Sunday and Monday.

The heavy rainfall meant that the biggest Wallingford Heads rowing competition, featuring 300 crews and 2,000 rowers, was today on the brink of being cancelled.

The event, between Moulsford and the new Oxford University Rowing Club boathouse at Wallingford, is due to take place tomorrow.

Yesterday, the Thames near Osney Lock was still high as footpath resurfacing work continued.

Organisers said they hoped to make a decision today.
