Fans queued for hours on Saturday to meet Sir Roger Bannister, the first man to run a mile in under four minutes.

Now there is another chance to catch him at the Chipping Norton Literary Festival on April 26. He will give a one-hour talk in the Methodist Church in a last-minute addition to the festival, describing how it felt to create history at Iffley Road running track in 1954. Now 85, he recalls how, when his record-breaking time was announced, the crowd heard the words “three minutes” and their cheering drowned out the rest.

After breaking the world record, he went on to pursue a successful medical career in neurology, ending as Master of Pembroke College, Oxford.

The book includes his views on drugs in sport, the nature of modern athletics and record breaking, the extraordinary explosion in running as a leisure activity, and the Olympic legacy.

Twin Tracks by Roger Bannister is published by Robson at £20.

Tickets for his talk are available from The Theatre box office, 01608 642350, or www.chiplitfest.com
