An event was held last night at the Oxford Union to mark the 50th anniversary of the visit of political activist Malcolm X.

A panel including Professor Stephen Tuck and novelist Ben Okri met at the world-famous debating chamber to mark the anniversary.

The event was entitled Macolm X’s Speech in Oxford — 50 years later.

Malcolm X was assassinated the year after he visited the union in 1964.

His motion from 50 years ago, which included the notion that extremism in the defence of liberty was no vice, was debated last night.
