POKER nights will soon become a regular fixture at a popular Eynsham pub, as a new landlord vows to bring the inn back to life.

The Jolly Sportsman, in Lombard Street, has been given a £75,000 facelift with a full redecoration, new lighting, flooring, fixtures and fittings, along with new toilets and a bar.

The outside has also been improved with new planting, decorations and a refurbished smoking shelter.

Behind the transformation is Stuart Cockwell, of pub operator Punch and Publican who wants to breathe a new lease of life into the pub by organising classic cheese and wine nights as well as gambling events. As well as the refurbishment he has also introduced a new grill menu and will be running a breakfast club on weekend.

Mr Cockwell said: "After being in the trade for 17 years, I decided it was time for a change and to go back to what I knew. I started my career in a village pub and later moved to restaurants and hotels where I trained to Michelin standard as a chef.

"I am now back in the beautiful village of Eynsham to begin a new project and I am really looking forward to what the future has to offer. Opening night was fantastic and the investment really has transformed the pub."

The publican has also introduced a traditional Sunday roast dinner, along with steak night and cheese and wine night.

He also wants to introduce poker nights and offer more sports teams. There are also plans for summer barbecues and wood cooked hog roasts for the local community.

New business manager for Punch Stuart Burley said: "The Jolly Sportsman is lucky enough to have a consistent group of locals who enjoy coming to the pub. I know that with Stuart's knowledge and expertise, he will make the Jolly Sportsman a huge success and bring the local community a really great pub."
