JACK Rooney clinched top honours in the Oxfordshire Babolat County Closed Championship.

Rooney defeated Thame’s Joel Morris 6-4, 6-4 to claim the crown, after finishing runner-up last year.

A lack of entries meant the women’s event did not take place, but there were still some notable achievements.

Eynsham’s Chloe Elliott won two singles and two doubles titles in the under 14 and 16 age groups, while Buckland’s Connor Ferguson enjoyed three wins in the singles (under 14 & 16) and the under 14 doubles.

Ethan Mclellan was awarded the John Parsons trophy for fair play, while the father and son combination of Seb and Christophe Muller, from Appleton, won the Quorn Family Cup and progress to the regional stage.

OXFORDSHIRE’S team of Paul Butcher, David Collins, Tom Greenland, Christian Peterson and Bruce Young missed out on glory in the Over 35 Inter-County Championships at Eastbourne.

Wins against Cheshire (4-1) and Lincolnshire (3-2) gave Oxon a play-off with Warwickshire to secure promotion to Division 4.

But injuries took their toll, and with Collins missing they lost 4-1.

WITNEY will win the Men’s Division 1 title if they can avoid defeat against Oxford Sports this weekend in the Oxfordshire Babolat Summer League.

Sports avoided relegation with a 6-2 victory against Cholsey, meaning Wantage and Oxford Sports B are relegated from the top flight.

Thame sealed promotion to Division 1 with an 8-0 win over Witney B – their seventh whitewash in seven matches.

The team of Steve Bell, Nigel King, Joel Morris and Mark Wilkins completed the campaign by winning all seven matches 8-0 and dropping only two sets all season.
