Our reporter James Roberts has been gathering the opinion of local residents on the proposed visit of USA President Donald Trump...

In Woodstock, where Blenheim Palace sits, residents are divided over the visit, which is reportedly set to see Trump visit the birthplace of Winston Churchill for dinner.

Campaigners have strongly objected to his rumoured appearance and suggested they will protest against it.

Even as a famous teetotaller, President Trump may be able to get a free drink in some of the pubs – but he’ll be charged like any other customer in others.

While a member of staff at The Star Inn said he would shake President Trump’s hand and give him a free drink, the world leader will receive no special treatment at the Bear Hotel.

Assistant manager Gary Reilly said: “I don’t like him. He’s controversial and loves himself more than anyone else.

“People obviously voted him in but I don’t think people are going to come to Woodstock just to see him. Maybe people will stay away because of some of his comments.

“If he comes in here I’ll say pay the normal price like everyone else - a customer’s a customer.”

His views contradict the position of Oxfordshire County Council's leader, Conservative Ian Hudspeth, who wrote on Facebook: "Whatever you think of him he has been democratically elected by the residents of the USA, I respect democracy."

Town councillor Philip Redpath said: “The UK has had some very strange bedfellows in the past.

“At least Trump is upfront, so we’ll know what comes out of the visit. I don’t have a problem at all with him visiting Blenheim.”

The office of police commissioner Mr Stansfeld was not able to provide any comment at this time.

Oxfordshire County Council did not respond with an official comment but council leader Ian Hudspeth, speaking on a Woodstock-based social media page, said: "Whatever you think of him he has been democratically elected by the residents of the USA, I respect democracy."

In a poll of 821 people on oxfordmail.co.uk, 74 per cent of responders said they would not welcome the President to Oxfordshire.
