TRIBUTES have poured in for the Oxford icon widely known as the ‘Botley bag lady’, who has been found dead off Botley Road.

An inquest into the death of Eleanor Boulton, 73, of no fixed abode opened at Oxford Coroner’s Court yesterday.

It is understood that Ms Boulton was the well-known character who, for years, walked up and down the Botley Road carrying plastic carrier bags.

Garnering her own appreciation groups on social media, the eccentric figure was famous both in Oxford and outside of the city.

The court heard how human remains were found in a metal hut in grassland off the Botley Road on June 27.

Police had received a ‘fear for welfare’ call after Ms Boulton had not been seen for a number of months and attended the hut where she was known to stay.

Upon arrival at the site, officers found they could not get close to it because the surrounding vegetation had grown so dense.

The local neighbourhood team helped to cut back the grass and the badly decomposed remains were found inside.

Coroner Darren Salter told the court how it was not possible to identify the body or establish a cause of death because of the state of the remains but officers were working on the basis that it was Ms Boulton.

She was known to have previously refused all medical treatment and care.

A full inquest will be held on November 1.
