SHOPPERS could spot new signs directing them to the ‘hidden’ areas of the Westgate Centre if plans are approved by Oxford City Council.

Planners have applied to install five new signs which will point visitors to the lifts, and direct them downstairs, and upstairs to ‘more shops’.

It comes after managers at the Westgate Centre stuck a floor sign outside of the ‘forgotten’ downstairs social, and added outdoor seating.

Traders welcomed the changes after hitting out in June at the lack of footfall, which they blamed on poor signage.

Adding to their efforts before summer, shopping centre managers have now applied to add more signage, including a large totem, a panel on the balcony, and a couple of posters.

A member of Oxford Civic Society wrote a public comment, which forms part of the online application– found using the reference 18/02194/ADV.

He said other signs should be made ‘better’ before new ones are installed.
