A NINE-YEAR-OLD boy is following in the footsteps of his hero, Sir David Attenborough, by warning people not to throw litter in the oceans.

Finley Peedell left a message on Teignmouth beach, Devon, while on holiday in August, with his drawing of a turtle, entitled 'Don't litter the sea'.

His identical twin Thomas helped produce the creation, which reflected the Witney brothers' longstanding passion for the environment.

Finley, who attends The Blake Church of England Primary School in Witney with his brother, was very proud of the design and hopes it will make people think twice before littering.

He said: "Thomas collected some rocks for me and I made it out of sea shells.

"Then I was thinking what a bad thing pollution is because if it gets so bad we might have to move to another planet - we don't want to move.

"I really care about the environment, I love trees and wildlife.

"I tell people about the dangers and ask them not to throw their rubbish in the sea."

The brothers both became interested in wildlife and the environment around age five, with Blue Planet presenter Sir David quickly becoming an icon.

Series two of the BBC show, broadcast last year, shocked viewers with some particularly heartbreaking clips of the impact of human activity on marine life.

Scenes including a hawksbill turtle tangled in a plastic sack, before being freed by a camera operator, persuaded several organisations to commit to reducing single-use plastic.

Finley and Thomas are trying to help in whatever way they can, but their interest in all things nature certainly does not stop there.

Their other main interest is ants, which even extends to knowing the Latin names for all the different types of the insect.

They have an ant farm at their Witney home, where they live with mum Nicky and dad Derek, although their current interest is about the planets and the solar system.

Mrs Peedell said: "They've got amazing minds, I don't know how they retain so much information.

"Their grandfather watches a lot of nature programmes so whenever he looks after the boys it's on the TV."
