OXFORD brothers Adrian and Nicholas Russell were forgiven for tooting their own horns in April 1974 after they were picked for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.

The success of cornet player Adrian, 15, and euphoniumist Nicholas, 13, meant that five members of the City of Oxford Youth Silver Band were then members of the national ensemble.

Frans Wolff, secretary of the Oxford band, said: "This is outstanding when you consider that there are 2,000 bands in the country and only 100 are picked."

Giving the Headington brothers a few tips on their new appointments were national band 'veterans' Marilyn Wolff, 14, Elaine Wolff, 12, of Divinity Road, and 19-year-old Gaynor Woodhouse from Old Marston.
