AN OXFORD pub which locals have been trying to save for years finally looks set to be converted into a home.

The Vale Brewery Company, which owns the General Elliot in South Hinksey and has been trying to sell it since 2016, has applied for planning permission to officially change its use.

Unusually, the firm has not supplied any extra information or justification in its application to Vale of White Horse District Council.

'Tough times' blamed for sale of village pub and Indian restaurant

The bid comes after a string of closures and attempts to reboot the last pub in the village.

The Elliot first closed in 2009 and stayed shut for the next five years.

In 2014 husband and wife team Cass and Helen Hazlewood bought the lease and reopened the pub to celebrations from the village.

However just two years later the pub had shut again and the Vale Brewery Company, based in Brill, Bucks, had put it on the market.

Estate agent Davis Coffer Lyons started offering the pub in April that year at a guide price of £550,000, but now it seems no suitable offers were made.
