AN APPEAL for a dog to stay with its family has been rejected by Oxford City Council.

Natasha Butterfield has been ordered to re-home one of her dogs, Benson the Shar Pei, after an incident with a cat.

A tenancy manager, speaking on behalf of the council, wrote a letter to the dog owner explaining that the appeal was rejected and 'was not taken lightly' after claims from a neighbour that her cat was killed by Benson the dog.

The mum of four, who lives in Marston with her three dogs and two cats, explained that the dogs were just 'playful'.

In appealing, she said she would do 'anything' they ask to avoid re-homing her pets like muzzling Benson, and keeping him on a lead in public.

She also invited the council to her home to meet the dogs.

The tenancy manager explained in the appeal letter: "The fact there were no puncture wounds or blood visible does not mean that the cat was not injured as it may have had internal injuries."

"Oxford City Council does not take the decision to ask a tenant to re-home their dog lightly as we appreciate the affection held for the animal. We do however have a duty to ensure the safety of the residents and animals in your community. I have to advise you that I cannot uphold your appeal."

Bill Graves previously told the Oxford Mail: “We have a responsibility for the safety of our residents.”
