DEBRIS caused by a crash scattered on part of the M40 this morning and caused lengthy delays.

Traffic was slow on the northbound carriageway between Oxford and Bicester this morning, affecting drivers between Junction 8A at Wheatley and Junction 9 at Wendlebury.

Two lanes were closed and there were hour-long delays, but all lanes had reopened by 10.30am and congestion has since cleared.

There were reports of a car bumper in the middle lane but several drivers who tweeted about the collision said no-one appeared to have been injured.

One man said the collision involved a Lotus sports car, which ended up 'smashed to bits' on the hard shoulder.

He added: "Looks like it span a few times and hit [the] barrier on hard shoulder."

There were three-mile queues on the road between Worminghall and Boarstall.

Highways England said the incident involved 'multiple vehicles', though it is not clear if this was a subsequent crash or the initial crash.
