A SUPERMARKET in Abingdon had the contents of its cash point stolen last night in a suspected ram raid attack.

The Northcourt Road Co op and post office is understood to have been targeted at 3.30am by thieves who smashed their way into the store before making off with the money from its ATM.

A picture posted on Facebook showed the shop with a broken window, with police officers and a cordon at the scene.

Thames Valley Police have been contacted but have not yet responded.

The woman who shared the image said it was one of four places targeted last night, though this has not been confirmed by police.

Staff said the post office was still open as normal but was limited to one till.

Last month, police raided homes across Oxfordshire and neighbouring counties as part of an ongoing investigation, named Operation Shire, into tracking a gang of thieves who have wreaked havoc in the county by stealing ATMs over recent months.

The force struck at 10 locations with 250 officers involved in conducting searches and making arrests.

Three stolen shotguns, two suspected stolen quad bikes and a stolen motorcycle were among the items found.

Five men and one woman were arrested in connection with the operation.
