AN HGV struck the central reservation in the early hours of this morning on the M40.
The lorry hit the barrier between junction 9 for Bicester and junction 8A for Oxford.
Highways England originally closed lanes in both directions and have since said the lorry has been recovered.
It added that extensive damage to the barrier means it needs to carry out immediate emergency repairs and the lane closures are expected to remain for several hours.
The closures include two lanes southbound and one lane northbound.
Highways England was reporting around 45 minute delays but these have now reduced to around 18 minutes.
Delays currently at approx 18 mins above usual travel time between J9 and J8a on the #M40 southbound nr #Oxford. 2 lanes (of 3) remain closed for emergency roadworks to replace 270 m of damaged central reservation. Please allow extra time. 1 lane (of 3) also closed northbound. pic.twitter.com/URPRMcGbzb
