CONCERNS over the rate of burglaries in Headington and the decision to close Marston and Northway Neighbourhood Police Office were raised during a live web chat hosted by Thames Valley Police.

The force held the online forum for residents in north east Oxford on Thursday to answer questions and share advice.

The panel included members of the north east neighbourhood policing team – Sergeant Andrew Poole, PC Simon Collins, PCSO Robert Frost and PCSO Charlie Roberts.

One resident said they had heard the local neighbourhood police office was closing, asking why and ‘where will we be able to visit you for face-to-face contact?’

The team responded: “Marston Office is due to be closed in May 2019 due to cost. We are looking at alternative options in the heart of the community.”

The Oxford Mail reported earlier this month on fears the Westlands Drive office closure would increase the risk of crime in the area and leave locals feeling less safe.

At the time a spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said ‘bricks and mortar has little to do with policing’ and the decision was part of a review to reduce estate costs.

Another resident in the web chat said they were worried about the number of burglaries in the Headington area.

The team responded: “At present we have a dedicated team with an oversight of all the burglaries within the city.

“The neighbourhood team work with the local team, and we will target hard vulnerable premises and offer crime reduction advice, patrol targeted hot-spots, conduct letter drops.”

The added: “We would encourage residents to invest in security lighting, leave a light on when you’re out, keep valuables out of sight. Close and lock all your doors and windows when going out or to bed.”
