A THUG who floored a woman after punching her to the head with a filled beer can has been jailed.

Max Paintin, of Balfour Road, Blackbird Leys, Oxford, had already admitted the one count of causing grievous bodily harm.

Oxford Crown Court heard at his sentencing hearing yesterday how the 21-year old was outside the Martin's store, Balfour Road at about 4pm on July 19 last year.

CCTV footage played to the court appeared to show a brawl with a group outside, while cars pass by and customers walk in and out of the store.

The victim Kejda Koshaj is seen to push out at Paintin, in what was described in court as representing 'an element of provocation.'

Just moments later, however, Paintin is seen to lunge towards the woman before striking her hard to the face while holding a can of beer.

The victim was at court to read her victim personal statement in which she described ongoing physical and psychological difficulties after the attack.

In mitigation, his defence barrister Michael Gould said that Paintin suffered a series of mental health problems and pointed to the provocation during the daylight brawl.

He added that his client was 'remorseful' at what he had done.

Sentencing, Judge Maria Lamb said that the blow inflicted by Paintin was 'wholly disproportionate' in responding to the actions of his victim.

Paintin was jailed for 12 months.
