PUPILS at an Oxford school ‘sung’ a pop song using only their hands.

The entire community at New Marston Primary School gathered to stage Take That’s The Greatest Day using sign language, as part of a national event called sign2sign.

All 350 pupils at the school joined staff to perform the song, earlier this month.

Headteacher Tracey Smith said the school taught four pupils who were hearing impaired or deaf, but said most four to seven year-olds at the school were able to sign proficiently to communicate with their peers.

Thousands of schoolchildren across the country took part in the challenge between February 4 and 10, which was organised by the deaf health charity SignHealth.

Pupils learnt the hand movements ahead of time and also mouthed along with the lyrics.

The charity encouraged participants to donate £1 each to support its work.

sign2sing promotes sign language as a communication tool and aims to make music more accessible to those who cannot hear it.
