A CONVENT will move its front gates away from 'the busy road' if plans are given the thumbs up by Oxford City Council.

The big black gates on Garsington Road will be moved backwards, towards the convent, so that cars turning into Elmthorpe in Cowley can wait on the driveway – rather than holding traffic up on Oxford Road.

The new gates, which will be five metres wide and tower at 3m tall, will be open as usual in the daytime but close to keep the resident sisters safe at night.

Planners say the re-shuffle of the gates will make Oxford Road safer and traffic more flowing.
