RIDERS resigned to the Oxford Speedway history books will be reunited at an anniversary event.

At least a dozen former speedway riders will join more than 100 fans at Garsington Sports and Social Club on Sunday, to celebrate 80 years since the first ever meet at the Blackbird Leys stadium.

Those due to attend the reunion include Gordon Kennett, who rode for Oxford Rebels in the mid-1970s and formerly ranked at world number two.

Speedway fan Rob Jeffery organised the event alongside former Oxford Silver Machine promoter Nigel Wagstaff.

Mr Jeffery said: "This is a chance to have a good chinwag with former riders of the Cheetahs, Rebels and Silver Machine.

"We want a really enjoyable day, with everyone having fun, and riders and supporters catching up and renewing old friendships, and to show interest in Oxford Speedway in very much alive and kicking."

The event starts at 3pm with a meet and greet, and there will be Aunt Sally, darts and pool for attendees to enjoy.

In the evening there will be a buffet and stories, with a question and answer session with Mr Wagstaff and the riders.

Footage of racing over the years will be screened and there will also be a raffle and auction, for causes including Oxford Heart Centre and Sobell House Hospice.

The event will also support Horspath Hammers cycle speedway racer and junior world number four Will Jeffery.

The few remaining tickets can be booked by emailing rosandrob@btinternet.com.

Entry is £10 for adults, £6 for children and students and free for former riders.

Last week the Oxford Mail reported how several businesses had moved out of the stadium site, as hopes for its future fade.
