A RARE Abingdon-built car which has travelled around the world is expected to fetch up to £5,000 at auction.

The 1953 Riley RMF was put together at Abingdon's MG factory but was first registered in Singapore by an employee of the Met Office.

It then came back to the UK in 1957 where it had one other owner before being bought by the current vendor's family in the early 70s.

The RMF was produced by Riley from 1945 to 1955 and only 1,000 were ever made.

Although it was originally manufactured in Coventry, production was moved to the MG works at Abingdon in 1949.

Having been built for export, the car is a right-hand drive model, making it even more unusual.

The car will be sold by Special Auction Services in Newbury on Tuesday, April 9, and is expected to fetch at least £3,000.

The company said: "It is in very good condition for its age as it has been in dry storage since the late 80s."

They added: "As the engine does turnover, whoever buys it can do the minimal amount of mechanical work to get it back on the road or if course fully restore it."
