THERE is no shortage of art shows by pupils and students, but what about their teachers?

This week The North Wall in Summertown is taken over by teachers from neighbouring St Edward’s School.

The show, called 395, is the first collaboration by ‘Teddies’ teachers Jane Bowen, Adam Hahn, Phil Jolley, Sharon Keen, Peter Lloyd-Jones, Nicholas Permain and Lorraine Turley.

Working in media ranging from drawing and painting to ceramics and textiles and the genre of the figure, interiors and landscape, it promises to be one of the most exciting exhibitions in the venue’s calendar.

Scottish Artist Lorraine Turley lives in Oxford and has taught part-time at St Edward’s for 10 years. Her landscape paintings come from memories of places visited in Scotland and Iceland.

Former Ruskin and Royal Academy of Arts student Peter Lloyd-Jones teaches part-time in the art department and was head of department from 2009-2013. His four large-scale ink drawings on show are preliminary studies for oil paintings based on interiors and still life studies.

Nick Permain, who lives in Oxford, has taught art at Teddies for three years and is also head of tennis. He said: “My work in this exhibition reflects on moving house and the memories of the home that we take with us.”

Adam Hahn is head of art at St Edward’s and has worked at the school for eight years. He lives in Summertown with his family.

A celebrated portrait artist, his work has twice been exhibited in the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, Prague.

Primarily a painter working in oils, his work in the exhibition is a series of portraits based on other people’s ‘selfies’.

He said: “My compositions capture the way people’s sense of self-expression – and the way they frame their photographs – differs depending on their age.”

Textile designer and artist Sharon Keen lives in a cottage in Launton, near Bicester.

She has worked at Teddies art department for several years starting with an artist residency and now works as a technician.

She says: “My work in the exhibition explores print, using natural elements that don’t harm our planet. Each piece is completely unique and can never be replicated.”

Ceramicist Phil Jolley lives in Oxford and has worked at St Edward’s for 26 years. He said: “It is great to see such a variety of quality work produced by the staff from the art department.”
