MORE details about Witney's new primary school have been revealed - but the building will open a year later than planned.

The River Learning Trust (RLT) has confirmed a working title of Windrush Primary School for the new academy, which will be located on the 1,000-home West Witney development.

Meanwhile, the first images of the Church of England school have been released, but the trust revealed the opening date has been put back to September 2021.

This is believed to be because the pace of construction on the housing development means there will be insufficient demand for places in September next year, the original opening date.

However, the consortium of housebuilders on the estate claims the site is 'progressing well'.

It is understood that the school would have opened in 2020 with enough demand, and Paul James, chief executive of the RLT, insisted there was no cause for alarm.

He said: "The school may have been put back a year but we are confident about the project moving forward.

"The images of the school are extremely exciting and we are very happy with the choice of name, although it is not yet confirmed.

"What is really important is that the school only opens when it is needed and the decision on the opening date has been taken with that in mind."

The free school will be run in partnership with the Diocese of Oxford and is set to take on 45 pupils each year from Reception upwards. It will eventually hold 315 children up to Year 6, plus 39 full-time nursery places.

The school, along with provision for possible secondary education, was included in the original application for the 1,000-home site in 2012.

The Windrush will also help meet demand for school places on the 257-home development on land near Downs Road, which lies next to the West Witney site.

Outline planning permission for permanent school buildings has been granted, while a reserved matters application for the school was submitted in March.

This is unlikely to go to committee as it is 'not controversial', according to a West Oxfordshire District Council spokesperson.

He added: "The decision is due by June 13 and is likely before then."

Meanwhile, Witney Town Council says it 'fully supports' the new school.

Jo Duckles, spokesperson for the Diocese of Oxford, said: “We are delighted to be working with the River Learning Trust on this new primary school, which will serve the needs of the growing community in West Witney.

"We will build on our positive relationship with the Trust as the plans for the new school develop. The Diocese of Oxford is keen to support the development of new communities and this new school is just one of the many ways we are aiming to do that.”

A spokesman for consortium developers Bloor, Bovis Homes and Persimmon Homes, said: “The West Witney development is progressing well and we are working with the county council to deliver the school to a timescale in accordance with the section 106 agreements detailed in the planning application.”
