A PAEDOPHILE who groomed his teenage victim during a six-month campaign of abuse before their 'relationship' erupted in violence has been jailed.

Aaron Kitney, of Nettlebed Mead, Oxford, had already admitted three counts of sexual activity with a child

A sentencing Judge at Oxford Crown Court yesterday called the 29-year old ‘jealous and possessive’ throughout the ordeal and said the sexual abuse included both violence and coercion.

Outlining the case prosecutor Kim Preston said that Kitney engaged in numerous and repeated instances of sexual activity with his teenage victim between July and December last year.

The girl, who was aged under 16 at the time of the offences and cannot be named for legal reasons, agreed to the sex acts because she felt it was ‘expected of her’.

Ms Preston said that events finally came to a head in December when an argument between them erupted over the teenager having contact with other males of her own age.

During the row that ensued Kitney put the girl in a headlock in an attack that resulted in bruising to his victim’s face and thigh.

After the violence, the court heard, there were further sex acts between the pair.

Not long after the abuse was reported and Kitney was arrested, where he initially ‘minimised’ the level of abuse he had carried out but later made ‘full admissions’ before pleading guilty to all counts.

The court also heard that Kitney had a number of previous offences for battery but no similar sexual offences.

In mitigation at the hearing his defence barrister Lucy Ffrench said that her client was sorry for what he had done.

She said: “There is clear evidence of remorse on his behalf. He has sobbed throughout these proceedings from his police interview onwards.

“He would like to say sorry to the court and he is fully aware of the seriousness of the offences.”

Sentencing, Judge Peter Ross said: “It is clear from the evidence in this case that you engaged in coercive behaviour in the relationship with her.

“If she declined to have sexual intercourse with you you would in her words ‘get sh***y,' you would become moody and off with her.

“She carried on with the relationship, not because it was a genuine relationship of equals but because she thought that this relationship was what was expected of her.

“There was secrecy and towards the end of the relationship there came a time when you used physical force, causing bruising to her face and her leg.

“The frequency of sexual activity was considerable.

Kitney was jailed for eight years on each count to run concurrently with each other, and must pay a victim surcharge and be subject to a sexual harm prevention order.
