A BEDROOM caught fire after a cigarette fell onto a mattress.

Two fire engines from Hyndburn attended the house fire, which took place at 2pm. The fire in the bedroom started at a house on Cartmel Avenue in Accrington.

The fire was already out by the time the crews arrived, but a ventilation unit was needed to clear the smoke. Three people lived in the house, but only one was in the house at the time of the fire.

It started due to a discarded cigarette falling onto a mattress and setting it alight. A spokesman from the Accrington Fire Service, said: "Our advice is to use smoke alarms, and do not smoke in your bedroom.

"The cigarette had fallen onto the mattress and left there, then it set the mattress on fire. Please be careful when smoking."

First aid was given to one person suffering from smoke inhalation.
